Cute Handmade Cartoon Wooden Gifts: White Puppy Figurine

by Wooden Smile 18 Jul 2024

Hello everyone, we meet again, and this post continues to bring you wooden gifts you haven't seen before. This is a white puppy wooden figurine from a famous Japanese anime, does it look familiar to you? Yes, it's Shiro from Crayon Shin-chan. we will share the process of making it from start to finish and finally spray painting it white, exactly as cute as in the anime! We'll show you each step of the process in the form of a moving picture, hoping that wood carvers will be inspired and learn from the experience.

Sketch the Shiro figurine

Design the shape of the wooden gifts and hand-paint the sketches on a wooden block. We can find a picture of the front of Shiro online as a reference. When drawing on the wooden block draw curved lines as the outer contour lines to emphasize its furry feeling without having to draw a regular oval shape. We only need to draw the front view because once we have chipped out the front, the sides only need to be sanded round and chipped out in key areas, so there is no need to sketch for the sides in the first step.

Sketch the Shiro figurine.

Shaping the puppy

We start chipping at the four corners of the square block of wood, shaving off the four corners and slowly working our way up to the sketch. Try to keep the cuts as vertical as possible, so that they don't ruin the sketch, and so that they are consistent from one side to the next. We need to keep the contour lines visible, this is to allow us to carve the details later, so please do not cut out the contour lines at this step.

Cutting out the sides and sculpting the details

Once we have cut out the front side, the other sides will still be square, so in this step we will cut out the excess for the sides to emphasize the three-dimensionality and spatiality of the Shiro figurine. Please refer to our motion picture to deal with the following parts:

  • For the tail keep only the center part of the wood.
  • Cut the underside of the puppy's face at an angle.
  • Treat the puppy's ears the same as the tail area, keeping only the center and shaving off the sides.
  • Cut the sides of the puppy's face at an angle.
  • Hollow out the wood in the center of the legs to create a layered look.
  • The left and right sides of the legs also need to be partially shaved off to emphasize the shape of the legs.
  • Round off all the angular parts.

    Coloring the Shiro figurine

We usually use water-based dyes to mix the colors and then color the wooden gifts. For this piece, no color mixing is needed, just use white dye to color the whole thing. For the facial expression, you can use a black marker to draw the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth.

    Finalize the wooden figurine.

The result is shown in the picture, this is a cute wooden puppy figurine named Shiro from the famous cartoon Crayon Shin-chan. This is a moderately difficult piece to carve, the shape is not complicated and there is not a lot of detail to be dealt with, so even beginners in wood carving can easily learn how to make it. We hope you enjoy this piece and make it yourself to give it to your fellow Crayon Shin-chan fans!
